While the current tally for New England during free agency doesn’t include DE Julius Peppers or WR Anquan Boldin, I’d say the Pats are having a decent off-season. The only free agent they signed, LB Marques Murrell, isn’t a marquee free agent. But the Patriots had success keeping their free agents.

Happy New Year everyone! The NFC is all about seeding this Sunday, with all of the players at the table. In the AFC, the two wildcard spots will be hotly contested with the Ravens and Jets owning the inside track. To this point of the season the Cowboys have taken care of business, for the most part. The Cowboys could very easily be 9-1 had they just maintained their composure against the likes of the New York Giants and Denver Broncos. But instead of dwelling on what could have been, the ‘Boys did a good job of moving on as they went on to win 6 of their next 7 games and claim 1st place in the NFC east. Unfortunately, none of that matters now. The Cowboys are 8-3 with the Philadelphia Eagles in a close trail at 7-4, and the Giants still kicking at 6-5. And being that the final five games of this season are in the dreaded month of December, the phrase “anything can happen” is an understatement.

After the Patriots’ loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the first thing I did when I started my car was turn off the radio. I almost didn’t turn on my t.v. When I did, I absolutely didn’t tune in to ESPN or NFL Network. This lasted through the next day until the Monday night football game. I didn’t read the newspapers for almost two days.

Pro Bowl balloting is open to the public. Choose wisely.
This year New England fans will have a tough time rationalizing Patriot players worthy of being selected. The offense’s big three of QB Tom Brady and WRs Randy Moss and Wes Welker will get their share of votes. Beyond them…good luck.

Jonathan Wilhite has missed the last two practices due to a reported illness, but for some reason Shawn Springs was wearing Wilhite's number 24 at today's session. Springs was #24 in Washington, so perhaps he's a superstitious guy and hoping the number will bring back his mojo. We haven't seen much of the veteran corner/safety since he was toasted more than once against the Denver Broncos.

I wish head coach Bill Belichick let Dennis Green do the post game press conference for him. I really needed to hear the Patriots let the Broncos off the hook. It was as if New England let off the gas in the second half offensively. I realize New England has a poor record playing in Denver but they can’t use that as an excuse. I don’t think the Broncos are three points better than the Patriots, but the Broncos made the plays and earned the overtime win.

The Patriots offense was virtually shut down by the New York Jets. QB Tom Brady was unable to get the offense into the endzone and was constantly rushed by a relentless New York blitz. It got people saying the Jets had the blueprint for beating the Patriots and with the rest of the league as witnesses, every opponent will follow suit.

Well, I have neglected this blog all year, but I had some free time today, so I figured I'd add a new post. The first two weeks of the NFL season have been pretty good, with the stupid Hail Mary from the Broncos to win week 1 (gosh I hate watching the highlights of that play) to the great game between Dallas and the NYG last week in the Texas palace. But the thing that has me the most excited is the Bengals' defense. They played hard all preseason, did really well agaianst Denver, minus that stupid Hail Mary, and recorded 6 sacks on Aaron Rodgers last week. This defense finished 15th last year and I feel they are well on their way to being a top 10 unit. With Odom healthy, it's easy to see why Cincy shelled out so much money for him last offseason. He has 7 sacks on the season (which leads the NFL) and works really well on third downs with Geathers on one end, Michael Johnson on the other, and Odom inside. This combo causes a lot of problems for the offenses and I feel that it will again this week against Pittsburgh.

It is the time of the year where we bid adieu to our Sunday trips to the local outlet malls and Bed, Bath and Beyond. Where, as men, we stop our tofu and salad diets in the name of our loved ones who are repulsed by our manly guts, and turn the grill up to happiness. No more flavored waters, playing cards with the in-laws or going to the zoo with your kids- no, my fellow men, it is Football season. It is the dawning of imported German sausage links, cheap-hardcore domestic manly beers (ok, maybe Light beers, let's be honest, we are a little fat), and the most destructive hard hitting American game filling our heads with fantasy stats, eye-popping hits, and hope for a glorious triumph.

What are the Denver Broncos doing right now? They are just a joke; they made a good hire; I thought. Josh McDaniels should be able to turn in into an offensive mastermind. He's learned from some of the best, and I think he's young and brash enough to make big things happen, but here is my problem. They are talking contract extension with WR Brandon Marshall? Really? This is the same guy that batted down passes on purpose during practice, walked while everybody else jogged/stretched, and then pulled the ultimate douchebag move and punted the ball away from the ballboy. Wow, because THAT's real tough. Mr. Marshall makes $2.198 million, and he acts like this. What a whiner.

-Bruce Bowen has retired from the NBA for anyone who actually cares. I care because I know that many of the NBA's top players can now rest easy knowing that Bruce Bowen isn't behind them trying kick them, punch them, tear their achilese, tear their ACL, poke them in the eye, or stab them in their sleep. I think that Bruce Bowen was a good player but he did not have to play the way he did in the latter part of his career. He sullied his reputation amongst the NBA fraternity. He could have been a all-world defender without being the worlds dirtiest player.

Pre-season predictions are probably one of my favorite things about the NFL off-season. I love this time so much because it absolutely validates my opinions of specific football analyst as well as football analysis as a whole. I mean seriously, has anyone listened to Mark Schlereth talk football. I’ll credit him on being a handsome and well spoken former football player, but he is no analyst. Same goes for “Dat Dude” Marcellus Wiley. I know he went to an Ivy League school, but I’m starting to seriously question this guy’s football intelligence. But I am digressing. Pre-season predictions are great because nearly everyone is wrong at the end of the season (not just Mark and Marc…that would be a great show huh?). There might be one or two people that actually predict the outcome of the Super Bowl, but to try and anticipate what will happen at the top end of the National Football League is nearly impossible. Notice I say “top end” because there are some teams that are guaranteed to be at the bottom of the food chain: Lions, Raiders, Rams, Bills, Chiefs, Broncos, Buccaneers, etc. But, predicting who will make the playoffs and who will ultimately win the Super Bowl is about as close to a crapshoot as you can get in professional sports. This is why I like that the Dallas Cowboys are ranked no higher than 15th on any major power rankings.

Since the Chicago Cubs and White Sox are all but out of contention in baseball, this Chicago fan can cheer for the Bears going into hostile territory and defeating the Denver Broncos.
It's not easy to win a game in Denver. But after seeing Jay Cutler go 15 for 21, throwing the ball with authority and leading the Bears offense and watching Kyle Orton trying to match up, the Bears may have gotten the steal of the year.

After last week’s impressive performance, the Chicago Bears are looking to improve on the little things and settle some key position battles. This week, they visit the mile-high city for one of the most hotly anticipated preseason match-ups in recent memory. As much as Jay Cutler and Josh McDaniels say this game doesn’t matter, you know they’re itching to embarrass the other guy just a little bit. I personally can’t wait to see our defense pick off Kyle Orton, but that’s just me.

We'll get back to horse racing soon. This is a lull in the season. Now, even the horse players are focused on the NFL. Who will be better? Who will be worse.
In this analysis, I simply take what the teams had, what they lost and gained, and weigh all the potentials. For example, 3 first and second round draft pick linebackers in their third year would translate into at least 2 successes.

There’s been a lot of talk of contracts of late: Why has Vince Wilfork’s talks stalled when Nick Kaczur and Mark LeVoir can get extensions? A team strength just got a tiny bit weaker. The Patriots traded DL Le Kevin Smith to Denver for a 5th round pick. That selection was then sent to Oakland to complete the Derrick Burgess trade. The agreement was New England gave the Raiders 3rd and 4th round selections unless the Pats could get Oakland a 5th round pick. If the Pats came through with the fifth rounder, then that would replace the fourth round pick.

Well the 49ers are off to a good start. Although I was hoping for more scoring from our offense, I was still pleased with the win.
The Defense was better than I thought they would be this early on in pre season. The way the secondary played was what I thought it would be...swarming! They were all over the place. They did give up a couple of big plays but kept their composure and played through it.

It's that time of year again folks. Time to start predicting the unpredictable. Will any of the Denver Broncos running backs get enough carries to warrant a spot on your roster? Can Michael Turner replicate last season's performance and warrant the second overall pick in your draft? What will Terrell Owens's numbers look like now that he is in Buffalo? And how does that impact Trent Edwards value as the Bills' QB? Who am I taking if I get the first pick? What if I get stuck at the end of the first round? Do I snatch up two running backs? Or should I go one running back and also nab a top tier receiver?

Wow! It has been a while since I have posted anything on here. It almost seems there is too much to say. Quarterback worries, our number one draft pick worries and Brandon Marshall worries. Where do I even begin? Well, my last post was about how I believe Kyle Orton will do just fine leading this team to the superbowl!! Maybe I am getting a little ahead of myself. I believe he will do just fine leading us to the playoffs, at the very least a winning record. There! Is that a little more rational? According to McDaniels he is looking good and feeling good. What more can we ask for at this point?

This is my first blog entry so it will be short.
Well what brung me to the broncos was champ baily. i think he is the best thing that happen to the broncos. I am kinda sad that they traded his brother boss baily. He was line backer. he was good too. I am thinking that they are going to trade champ too. i think this because he is getting old and i am not sure but i think he only has one more year on his contract, after this year. brain dawkins was another good descion to the defence. they had the worst defence last year. the offence kepp it up a lil bit but without a defence the team can get to the playoffs but not the super bowl. so this is my first blog. hope you like. my other ones i hope will get better and better and yall will enjoy.

Sure he posted a blog on his web site saying farewell to denver and its friends but could be because he dont think denver will keep him. Mcdaniels says that Marshall will be at training camp in July. I can’t remember a busier or more significant Chicago Bears offseason. After the miraculous acquisition of Jay Cutler (which I still can’t believe happened), and then the signing of Orlando Pace, Jerry Angelo could have sat out the rest of free agency and skipped the draft and Bears fans would have been content. Not one to rest on his new QB’s laurels, Angelo refuses to let up.

Ok Mr Brandon Marshall, after leading the NFL in RYAC (receiving yards after contact) in 2007, complimented by your 6' 4" 230lb frame, the nickname of, "The Beast" was aptly and well deserved. After back-to-back seasons (2007-2008) with 100 plus catches and 1,000 plus yds, your physical talent was needless to say, without question and one of the best as a receiver in the NFL. Now, had this been the main body of work to your story to date here in Denver, this is one fan whom would be firmly entrenched in your korner so to speak..

Tell me this isn’t happening again. Another soap opera at Broncos headquarters. Once again a key player is at the center of it, a player who has loads of talent. Heck, this player can certainly be described as a very unique talent. The player in question is unhappy, and has reportedly demanded a trade. Sound familiar? This did not work out as the Broncos hoped with Jay Cutler. How will it work with Brandon Marshall? Unfortunately, the Broncos might be about to find out. Mr. Marshall did not show for the team’s mandatory minicamp over the weekend.

Did Jay Cutler make the right choice, when demanding to be traded, and who benefitted the most, from his decision? There are two sides to every story, or at least there should be, so let's examine this situation from both perspectives, before drawing our own conclusions, shall we? Cutler has indicated that he was happy things worked in his favor in the end, but he might have alienated many Denver Broncos fans in the process, who are still seeking a successor to the legendary John Elway, and restore the renowned franchise to prosperity.

As OTA's and minicamps progress while training camp begin to roll over the horizon, America's favorite sport nears its regular season. While nobody knows how well teams will do in a season with the randomness of injuries and several other factors, it's always interesting to look ahead at the schedule and prognosticate. Unlike most people, I'm not going to give just a win or loss for each game, rather I'm going to predict how many times the Steelers would win if they played a team 10 times. For instance if the Steelers were playing a very crappy team, I would say 9/10 or 10/10. At the end i will add up the wins and divide by 10, giving us how many wins they will have this season.

I waited a few days after the NFL draft to post my thoughts on how the Broncos did because I needed time to digest their selections and determine whether or not I truly liked the moves the team made. The truth is, like with every draft, it will be a minimum two seasons and probably three before we can really assign a grade to this or any team’s draft, so any opinion expressed now is really a shot in the dark. For example, it looks like the Broncos’ draft of 2008 is good for the time being, as Ryan Clady and Eddie Royal both had outstanding rookie seasons. We still need to wait another year or two however before we can truly evaluate that draft as a whole. That said, I have a few thoughts on the Broncos’ selections from last weekend:

It says something about the popularity of the NFL that the release of the schedule is now a two hour prime time event. I somehow feel less stupid knowing I can’t possibly be the only one who eagerly anticipates the release of the schedule. If nothing else, it’s nice to know what it is so I can plan around it. For instance, I know that the Broncos will be playing on Thanksgiving night, so my family will know they shouldn’t plan to see me, things like that. The deal is done. Jay Cutler is now a Chicago Bear, traded for two first round picks, a third round pick and Kyle Orton. While a large part of me is still disappointed that the Broncos are trading away a 25 year old franchise quarterback with a rocket arm, the other, increasingly larger part is surprisingly ecstatic with the haul the Broncos have gotten in return for Cutler. The two first round picks alone are a hefty price to pay, but throwing in a third, and an established starting QB (albeit one who is not a Pro Bowler and one who does not have the raw talent of Cutler) means the Broncos might have actually gotten away with highway robbery. Consider that the Chiefs only surrendered a second round choice for Matt Cassel (and got Mike Vrabel in the deal as well) and it really seems the Broncos might have made out like bandits here.

Jets Lose Cutler Bidding and Win
The Denver Broncos traded Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler and a fifth round pick in the 2009 draft to the Chicago Bears for signal-caller Kyle Orton, first round picks in both the 2009 and 2010 drafts, and a third round pick in this April's draft Thursday evening.

Jay Cutler is a Chicago Bear. I said it. I can’t believe it. This was a pipedream. All I wanted to hear was that the Bears expressed their interest and were on the phones trying to make an offer. General Manager Jerry Angelo not only called the Broncos, but pulled the trigger on a massive blockbuster trade, acquiring the Pro Bowl QB from Denver.

Disgruntled quarterback Jay Cutler is being sent to the bears in exchange for Chicago Bears quarterback Kyle Orton, a first (18th overall) round pick, and a third (84th overall) round pick this year, and a first round pick next year. In addition the broncos will receive a 5th rounder this year (whoopdee doo). Now that I have seen the details of the exchange, i'm glad the Redskins didn't go through with it. First of all, the Redskins only had 4 total picks this year, trading away 2 of them would have left us with nothing. I did want Cutler, but that is a price even the Danny couldn't do. Luckily for us, Campbell is very composed, very mature, and dealing with the situation very well.

In some ways I can’t say I’m surprised. I’ll admit I was hopeful that Jay Cutler would come to his senses and realize that he could still have a future in Denver, but it seems as though the relationship between him and Josh McDaniels is so tarnished that it really is beyond repair. Tonight the Broncos issued the following statement:

Ok, I touched on the draft and free agency. Now its time to talk about the big rumor floating around the league. Jay Cutler is unhappy in Denver because his new coach tried to get another quarterback for the team. Although I don't agree with the way Josh Mcdaniels handled the situation, he is entitled to try and improve his team as he sees fit. I don't think Matt Cassel is anywhere near as good a quarterback as Cutler is, but its his team.

To those out there who have turned on Jay Cutler, I ask you to consider you're reasoning. He's too proud, he's not mature enough, he's like a spoiled kid. Jay Cutler is 25, going into his third real season leading the Broncos and his first two were pretty damn good considering he took over his rookie season. To judge him so harshly or characteristics that we all have within us is wrong. Think about the football side of it.

So apparently Josh McDaniels and Jay Cutler finally met face to face this weekend. They did not follow my advice of having the meeting be just the two of them, but rather were joined by Cutler’s agent Bus Cook and general manager Brian Xanders. As usual we have two different interpretations of how the meeting went down. Now, I have not trusted Chris Mortensen as of late because of his tendency to jump the gun (especially when he was convinced Mike Shanahan was going to Kansas City when everyone knew that would never happen), but in this case it seems he tracked down both Cutler and McDaniels, so we are able to draw our own conclusions without need for his analysis.

This is an open letter to Jay Cutler. I know the odds of him actually reading this are as good as Kansas suffering a 60 point loss to a 15 seed in next week’s NCAA tournament (please? please?), but it seems like he is getting really bad advice from someone or multiple someones, so here we go:

The Denver Broncos have certainly been active this offseason, there’s no question about that. The question is: are they a better team? I think in many ways they could be, but being active isn’t always the best move. The truth is we won’t know for sure until the first game kicks off in September what kind of impact all these moves will have. Still, you can’t say that new coach Josh McDaniels isn’t putting his stamp on things. Here are some of my thoughts on the Broncos’ offseason so far.

It has been a while since I last posted anything on here. Honestly there hasn't been a whole lot going on with the Broncos since the firing of Mike Shanahan and hiring of Josh McDaniels, until now. I don't even know where to begin. I suppose starting with the Cutler/McDaniels saga would be best. At first, I was completely on Jay's side about this issue. Even if McDaniels never really wanted to trade Cutler, he should have informed him that he was on the trade block, or at least in talks of a trade. Cutler deserves to know that much. McDaniels should have ended it before it even began. First off, Cutler is better than Cassel, flat out. Second, I don't think a new head coach wants to come to a team and trade away its best player. That has bad news written all over it. I know Coach McDaniels made it clear that Jay is the quarterback, but for the call to even have been made to him says that Jay wasn't exactly safe like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady.

According to ESPN the Dallas Cowboys have released Terrell Owens. Thank God!!!
There are a few things to look at over the next few weeks. One, where will Owens end up? Two, how will this affect the draft and Roy Williams? Three, who will become the replacement in the Cowboy's receiving courps?

So let me get this straight. The Redskins sign Albert Haynesworth to an outrageous 100 million dollar deal. Then they go out and resign Free Agent DeAngelo Hall, and then release DE Jason Taylor. And why, because he didn't want to spend his off season sitting at the Redskins stadium. Why should he spend eight of his thirteen weeks off working? I don't know. But the Skins sure thought he should. The man has three kids and a wife in Florida. As a professional football player I'm sure he doesn't get a lot of time with his family any ways. I just would've thought Jason Taylor would be an asset to that team. He'll find a new home with out a problem though I'm sure.

As the draft approaches, it's obvious that the Patriots need an outside linebacker that can effectively rush the quarterback and maybe another cornerback to add to the competition between Ellis Hobbs, Jonathan Wilhite, and Terrence Wheatley. Finding the kind of LB that would fit in New England will be tougher this year.

Brett Lorenzo Favre, the beloved gunslinger from Southern Mississippi who was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons, made his first pass completion on his way to prominence as a Packer to himself and adorned a New York Jets uniform in his final season, announced his retirement yesterday…again.

A bit of Patriots news happened over the last couple of days. Let's review:
Brady Says Rehab Going Well - While speaking to a Toronto radio station, QB Tom Brady said his recovery from ACL surgery is progressing. Well that's reassuring! I remember when the two conflicting reports came out - one saying Brady could miss the 2009 season due to setbacks and the other relying on other sources that said everything is on schedule. This announcement by Brady doesn't prove either story, but it puts a Pats fan's mind at ease to a degree. I feel he will be back this year and the Patriots will again be a Super Bowl contender.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels turned down opportunities after last season, but he knew teams would keep knocking on his door. He was waiting for the right opening, and the chance to be the Denver Broncos' head coach might be exactly what he wants.

The Denver Broncos gave the San Diego Chargers the greatest gift a team could ask for. A playoff spot. It has been well documented in the last few weeks about the Broncos three-game lead and their failure to win at least one of them to lock up the division and get in to the playoffs. The Chargers were virtually playing for pride when they set out after notching a record of 4-8. They kept winning and the Broncos kept losing. The AFC west title was neatly gift wrapped for the bolts. How did San Diego thank them? By beating the red-hot Indianapolis Colts led by league MVP Peyton Manning. Now all of the sudden this 8-8 football has a chance to get into the AFC championship. Are you kidding? A 500 record team has a ligitemate shot to win the Superbowl! What a gift indeed by the Broncs.

An era has ended in Denver. The firing of Head Coach Mike Shannahan took many by surprise, but some saw this one coming. Could it have been the lack of post-season play for the past three years? Possibly, but most think the last straw was giving up a three-game division lead with three games left that finally ended Shannan's blue and orange days. Say what you will about the man, but what he did for Denver was amazing. Other than Mr. Elway, his name is probably going to be the most mentioned name in Bronco history.

The Denver Broncos are currently accepting applications for... yup Head Coach!
Mike Shanahan will surely be missed. He has defined our city for 14 seasons with and without John Elway. Does anyone remember the frustration under Dan Reeves? Run, Run, Pass. Boooooring! Wade Philips? Nevermind him, Dallas didn't make the playoffs either.

I may be the only one saying it, but the era of Shanahan must come to an end.
Yes, I am aware of the Bronco Country reverence toward Mr. Shanahan, but at this point, he is without excuse.

What I am about to say here may sounds strange, or maybe not, but think about this solution to our BCS predicament. This could clarify and validate the BCS selections, the National Title Game, provide some great excitement, set a precedent for that kind of excitement, and get the ball rolling toward a college football playoff.

The Syracuse Orange finished yet another season of failure on Saturday, losing to BCS Busting Cincinnat 30-10 and sealing the 4th consecutive losing year for Syracuse. The team finished 3-9 and the best record under Greg Robinson was a 4-8 campaign in 2006. With the past 4 years finally finished, Greg Robinson fired, and the program in desparation mode, a new head coach is on the horizon. “I have made the decision to move our football program in a new direction and have informed Greg Robinson that his tenure as Syracuse’s head coach will end at the conclusion of this season" SU athletic director Daryl Gross said. That new direction could have been much of the same, as there was initial interest in former Raider head coach and ex-USC assistant Lane Kiffin. Gross worked with Kiffin at Southern Cal and rumors speculted there was a reunion possibly in the works. Now that Kiffin is the new coach at Tennesse that rumor can be put to rest. As for SU? Their search will continue and look for the school to take its time.
