I will be the first to admit that this whole Cutler trade situation got under my skin a bit. I was mad at McDaniels, I was mad at Cutler, and I was mad at Bowlen. Now that it is over and I have faced the reality that Cutler is not coming back, I have had a chance to think rationally. Kyle Orton is the guy, for now, and that's okay with me. He can manage a game, and that's what we need in order for our team to get better. I will explain.
Denver had one of the worst defences in the league last year no matter how much I hated to admit it. They were bad, but you have to admit, they were out on the field a lot more than the offense last year. Sometimes, okay a lot of times it was because they failed to stop the run or third down conversions, but every so often the offense would turn the ball over or score so fast that the defense would come out sluggish. I know it sounds bad to think an offense scoring fast is not a good thing, but it never seemed as though Cutler managed the game all to well.
Remember when the Chicago Bears went to the Superbowl against the Colts? Rex Grossman was not very good but he managed games. He turned the ball over quite a bit, but when the time to settle down and give that defense a rest came, he could do that. With Denver last year, the Chargers game in particular, the Broncos were working them over but Jay still continued to heave the ball down field. Had they just found a methodical way to move the ball, the game may never have come down to a bad call. He threw a lot of risky passes toward Brandon Marshall all year when he had a perfectly wide open tight end five or ten yards down field. A lot of those passes paid off. Marshal, for the second time, had a 100 plus catches. But sometimes an offense has to slow things down in order for the defense to do well.
Yes Cutler is a good quarterback. One day he will be a great quarterback. He just didn't manage well for Denver. I happen to believe Kyle Orton will manage games for us. He will settle for the short passes and chip away at first downs. It may not be flashy, but that's the kind of team Denver may need to be for the next few years. Plus, Orton is a tough son of a 'Expliced'
