I had an interesting conversation with a man at my place of work the other day about the departure of Mike Shanahan. The conversation started off by him asking me if I was going to be against Mike Shanahan when he goes to a new team. I replied, "only if he if he goes to a division team." I figured that was a reasonable response to the question but for some reason he flew off the handle saying that Mike was a legend and an icon for Denver fans and they still need to be loyal to him, but how can you be loyal to a coach when if he is on the opposite side of the field than the Denver Broncos? It's one thing to respect the man but to root for him when the Broncos face him is just plain crazy, and if he goes somewhere in the division than I will hope he loses the majority of his games. Now if we clinch the division early, than sure, I will hope he can put a few victories together.
If Mike Shanahan does in fact go to Kansas City, according to some floating rumors, then it would be only natural to consider him a rival. Yes, it will be tough seeing him in any other color than orange and blue but when push comes to shove, I am a Bronco fan, not a Shanahan fan. When Shannon Sharpe went to Baltimore for a couple years I still enjoyed watching him play, and I did root for him when he was in the Superbowl, but if we played the Ravens or needed them to lose to help our playoff chances then I rooted for just that. You could say the same thing about Clinton Portis and many other great Broncos that left Denver behind, because at the end of the day you stick with your team, no matter how painful the change.
I do hope Coach Shanahan finds success wherever he may go, but not against Denver. I won't feel any better if we lose to Shanahan. I wont say; well, at least we loss-ed to Mike. A loss is a loss. If we need his team to lose for some playoff scenario than I will root for the opposing teams. It is only natural. I will never forget what he did for us here in Denver, but whats done is done, we are in the hands of Josh McDaniel's now so I am now a McDaniel's fan. That being said, please don't go to Kansas City or San Diego coach. I know I don't have to beg, but please don't go to Oakland either.
